Summary
â¶In a long-running soap/sitcom itâs important to stay faithful to the original stories and characters. Popular soaps and sitcoms have a loyal fan base who know the stories and characters inside out. You can evolve them, but make sure you stay true to type or your fans will let you know!
â¶If you are creating a brand-new soap/sitcom then think about the place, the setting first â then develop the key characters; the matriarch, the rogue, the villain, the busybody around the location. Then you need a great script and a great cast to bring your stories to life.
â¶Scheduling is important to dramas. Stories are planned three-to-four months in advance and delivered about three weeks ahead of transmission.
â¶American soaps tend to involve glamorous worlds â such as the lives of oil tycoons in Dallas and Dynasty â whereas UK soaps and sitcoms are grounded in the lives of ordinary working people.
â¶Audience ratings are important, especially for commercial channels. Despite competition caused by increasingly fragmented television viewing habits, time-shifting, and streaming networks such as Netflix, soaps consistently dominate the top audience ratings figures, particularly ITVâs Coronation Street and Emmerdale and the BBCâs EastEnders. Sitcoms have the capacity to reach huge global audiences and are in need of a new hit. Get your thinking caps on â this could be your opportunity to create the next Friends!
